Minister’s message: Blessed are the peacemakers

October 2025 – prisoners have been released and returned to their families in Gaza and Israel, writes Rev James Gatherer.

Prayers for peace are being realized but all remains fragile, as peace often is.

The Gazan Christian community is one of the oldest in the world as are many of its buildings but it has been declining for years through persecution and emigration.

There are about 1,300 Christians left. During the war some of the churches opened their doors to
provide shelter for all who sought it. Muslims and Christians alike found safety within their
compounds.

One Roman Catholic Church (pictured) was hit by shrapnel from an Israeli missile, killing and
injuring several.

While some of the leaders in Gaza have been hostile towards Christians, among the people of the land there has always been a degree of mutual support and respect.

In the aftermath of the Danish cartoon scandal which produced threats again Gazan churches local police protected them. After mosques were destroyed in recent bombings one Catholic priest offered his church for the use of worshipping Muslims.

There are peacemakers who work together – Christians, Jews and Muslims. Though few in number
they make a difference and they are a little light shining in darkness.

“Blessed are the peacemakers’, Jesus said, ‘ for they shall inherit the earth.”
