Minister’s message: Old and new

The slow winding down of the old churches continues with the closure of hundreds of buildings in the next few years, writes Rev James Gatherer.

The old days of the Kirk are largely over. Church as we knew it is disappearing. It is a shame but
there are many things that have or are disappearing from Scotland for which we shall all be the poorer. Like stamps and snow.

However, there’s always more news around the corner.

I read recently that among Gen Z’s (13 to 28 year olds in the old language!) church attendance has nearly quadrupled over the last few years.

I was sceptical at first but then read similar reports coming from France, the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Sweden (the biggest increase in Europe)
and many more. Look online – there are lots of disillusioned atheists becoming new Christians.

Why? An identity crisis looming among the younger generations struggling to grow up in a Western world that has been socially trashed by their parents and grandparents. The realization that New Atheism (Dawkins et al) has become old fashioned.

The new growth in Christian spirituality is to be found in grassroot movements. If you want to know more come and ask me any Sunday.
