May 10: Atheism and Christianity – A New Perspective

There have been significant changes in attitudes towards Christianity in the last twenty years, writes Rev James Gatherer.

For many in Scotland it seems easier to identify as an atheist than as a Christian. Twenty years ago Professor Richard Dawkins was enjoying widespread fame as the author of The God Delusion and a new popular movement, New Atheism, began to grow across the western world.

But what about today? How has New Atheism fared?

Deep below the foundations of the western world are faint rumblings of yet more social change to come and some of them have a distinct Christian sound. Two new phrases have begun to appear in religious discussion forums — Christian Curious and Thinking Faith.

On Saturday 10th May in Kirkcudbright Parish Church I shall be presenting an illustrated talk on atheism and Christianity. It should be an interesting and perhaps surprising look at the rise of New Atheism and the unexpected effects that it has had among those looking for meaning and purpose in our ever changing and uncertain world.
